A Database Management System (DBMS) is a database program which manages the incoming data, organizes andmaintains it, and provides effective methods for modifying and retrieval of data by the users.
DBMS can be divided into two main categories: Pre-Relational DBMS and Relational DBMS. A Pre-RDBMS (Pre- Relational DBMS) is a traditional DBMS, which uses hierarchical structure or navigation (also known as network) structure.
Pre-DBMS runs on a mainframe or the operating environment specified by the vendor. It has a well-defined operations, and an efficient query processing and transaction management components. Further, it is used for large data volumes and high transaction processing.
On the other hand, RDBMS (Relational DBMS) consists of data that is structured in database tables, fields, and records. In this, a relationship is created by comparing data (such as, names, address etc.) that are available in the database tables, fields, and records. Moreover, RDBMS has the flexibility to take any two or more files, and generate a new file from the records that meet the matching criteria mentioned in the relationship.

DBMS is known to be one the most essential parts of any organization. It has made the work of accessing information very simplified. The users need not type a program to retrieve data or update it, they can do so using the query language on the data. Further, DBMS controls data access, enforces data integrity, maintains concurrency and helps in restoring data from back-ups.
This report by Technavio Insights highlights the scope of the DBMS market, along with future forecasts, trends, drivers, and challenges.
